Why Dental Fillings?

Many patients however experience no symptoms whatsoever until the problem has advanced and become more serious. We recommend routine dental care to reduce their risk of tooth decay and cavities. Why Dental Fillings?

Left untreated, tooth decay and cavities can actually become a very serious problem. As decay continues to progress it can reach your tooth root, leading to severe infections and discomfort. Tooth decay can also increase your risk of gum infections along with periodontal gum disease. Ultimately, cavities can result in a tooth having to be extracted.

Amalgam Silver Fillings

For many years, amalgam silver fillings were the only option when it came to treating cavities. However, research has shown that they contain mercury, a toxic, liquid metal. At Surprise Pediatric Dentistry we are proud to offer the latest, safest and healthiest options available.

Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings

At Surprise Pediatric Dentistry we are proud to offer tooth-colored dental fillings which are designed to blend with the patient’s natural smile. Tooth-colored fillings are typically made using a composite material and can last for many years with proper at-home and in-office dental care.

Dental Fillings Q & A

    What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is a procedure in which the team at Surprise Pediatric Dentistry seals up holes in your child’s teeth with a special filling material.

While dental fillings can be used for a variety of purposes, like fixing chipped teeth or closing up a gap between teeth, they’re most commonly used as a means of treating cavities caused by tooth decay.

Tooth decay happens when plaque is allowed to sit on your child’s teeth for too long. Plaque contains harmful acids and bacteria that slowly eat away at your child’s enamel — the hard outer layer of their teeth. The longer the plaque sits on their teeth, the bigger the hole, or cavity.

When your child gets a dental filling, their dentist removes all of the decayed material from the tooth in order to stop the cavity from growing. They then seal it up with a filling material, which prevents the harmful bacteria and acids from further damaging your child’s tooth.

What are dental fillings made from?

Surprise Pediatric Dentistry is an amalgam/mercury-free practice. That means that all of their fillings are done with a composite material that can be matched to the color of your child’s teeth.

Tooth-colored fillings maximize the aesthetics of your child’s smile while retaining strong bonding properties. This minimizes any chance of the fillings breaking or leaking, giving your child a smile that’s as healthy as it is beautiful.

Does it hurt to get a dental filling?

The team at Surprise Pediatric Dentistry is highly skilled in administering dental fillings and is well equipped to make your child’s experience as easy, comfortable, and painless as possible.

The team administers a local anesthetic before your child’s filling procedure, which effectively numbs their tooth and surrounding oral tissues, preventing them from feeling any pain during the procedure.

If your child is still nervous about their dental filling, or if they’re uncomfortable with the syringe used to administer the local anesthetic, Surprise Pediatric Dentistry offers sedation dentistry to make your child’s treatment even more stress-free.

     WHAT IS A DMD?
In the world of dentistry, the acronyms DDS and DMD often spark curiosity and confusion. What exactly is a DMD, and how does it differ from a DDS? Let's delve into the realm of dental education to demystify the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.

The DMD degree stands for Doctor of Dental Medicine. It's one of the two primary degrees awarded to graduates of accredited dental programs in the United States, with the other being DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Despite the different nomenclature, both degrees signify the same level of education and qualification in dentistry. The variance in titles primarily stems from historical and institutional differences among dental schools.

DMD programs encompass rigorous academic and clinical training, covering a wide array of dental specialties, including preventive, restorative, and surgical procedures. Students undergo comprehensive coursework and hands-on experience to develop expertise in oral health diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care.

Upon completion of their DMD degree, dentists are equipped to address various oral health needs, ranging from routine dental check-ups to complex reconstructive surgeries. They play a crucial role in promoting oral hygiene and enhancing overall well-being.

In essence, the DMD degree represents a commitment to excellence in dental practice, embodying the dedication and proficiency required to ensure optimal oral health for patients. Whether it's restoring a smile or alleviating dental discomfort, DMD dentists serve as guardians of dental wellness, making a significant impact on individuals' lives.

She brought her enthusiasm for preventive care, access to education, communication, and behavior guidance to Children’s Wisconsin where she pursued specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry. Her passion for whole-person health care continued to grow while caring for children with special healthcare needs and serving families in the poorest zip codes in Milwaukee.
