Dental Extractions for Kids in Surprise AZ

When looking for a pediatric dentist for dental extractions for kids in Surprise AZ, Surprise Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, is at the top of the industry. If you suspect your child has a tooth that needs extracting and/or he or she is complaining of a sore tooth, don’t waste any time to seek out a pediatric dentist to examin the situation. Staying on top of oral help will help establish good oral health from a young age. Researchers estimate that at least 50% of children develop one or more cavities in their primary teeth before getting their adult set.

Even though baby teeth are not permanent, leaving a cavity for too long can cause dental rot or gum disease. If a child develops either of these problems, they may persist long after they lose their baby teeth.

If you are concerned that your child is developing cavities, Surprise Pediatric Dentistry is here to help. Continue reading to find out how our pediatric dentists perform tooth extractions to help your children maintain a healthy smile.

What Is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction occurs when a dentist professionally pulls one of the teeth from its socket. Any infant, child, or teen who develops a cavity in their primary teeth may require tooth extraction to avoid further damage to oral health

Does My Child Need One?

Our pediatric dentists recommend children’s tooth extractions only as a preventive care measure. We never perform a tooth extraction if it is unnecessary. Children who experience extreme tooth decay or injury often require a tooth extraction.

Sometimes, the dentist at Surprise Pediatric Dentistry suggests a tooth extraction if your child’s baby teeth are inhibiting the development of adult teeth or if your teen needs braces.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Our dentist adheres to the following procedure for tooth extraction:

  1. First, our dentist will administer a numbing treatment so your child does not feel pain from the extraction.
  2. The dentist will then use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth.
  3. Finally, the dentist pulls the tooth out

After the tooth extraction, children require a special health care regimen to make sure the affected area heals properly. First, you should reapply clean gauze every 20 minutes to stop the socket from bleeding.

If your child experiences inflammation or pain, apply ice to the affected area for about 20 minutes at a time, removing it for a short period between applications. Following these steps will help the healing process and prevent infection.

Within the first two days after the procedure, your child should avoid straws and hard or sticky foods. You should also avoid rinsing the area for the first 24 hours, then use a saltwater rinse to help disinfect and reduce pain.

How Can I Prevent Children’s Tooth Extractions?

Proper dental care is necessary to prevent tooth extractions. Children and teens should brush their teeth twice a day. Infants’ teeth should be cleaned twice a day as soon as they begin to grow their primary teeth.

You should also discourage the consumption of sticky candies and sugary foods or drinks. This will help prevent forming cavities and decaying enamel.
