Kara Kalamachi DMD Surprise Pediatric Dentistry, lovingly know as Dr. Kara… is a general dentist with Surprise Pediatric Dentistry. She “hales” from Buffalo, New York. However, while attending dental school here in Arizona, she grew to love the terrain and the culture, and knew she couldn’t leave the Arizona sun!

After graduating Cum Laude (with distinction) from High Point University in North Carolina, Dr. Kara received her Doctor Dental Medicine (DDM) degree as well as her Master’s Degree in public health from the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. She has always loved children and although a general dentist, she decided to dedicate her career to treating children.

Dr. Kara stays heavily involved in the dental community, particularly with her work as an executive board member for the Arizona Oral Cancer Awareness Walk, held annually at the Phoenix Zoo;  the Arizona Missions of Mercy dental clinics; Give Kids a Smile events at ASDOH; and serving as a chapter advisory board member for NAU’s Kappa Delta sorority.

Outside of the office, you can find her reading (She reads almost ten books a month!), working on calligraphy, playing pickleball, and cheering on the Buffalo Bills.

Dr. Kara is passionate about pediatric dentistry. She loves to help lay a strong foundation for a lifetime of optimal oral health and create happy smiles from the start of childhood. She cares about connecting on a deeper level with every child she treats. Her upbeat personality ensures that both kids and parents are excited and comfortable during all visits with us, and she truly makes each family feel like they are hanging out with a very special friend.

Exploring the Role of a DMD Dentist
A DMD dentist, short for Doctor of Dental Medicine, is a dental professional who has completed a rigorous course of study in dentistry and obtained a DMD degree. DMD dentists are trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat various oral health conditions, ranging from routine cleanings and fillings to more complex procedures such as root canals and dental implants.

The journey to becoming a DMD dentist involves years of education and clinical training. After completing an undergraduate degree, aspiring dentists must attend a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). Dental school typically lasts four years and includes a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory work, and hands-on experience treating patients under the supervision of experienced faculty members.

During their dental education, DMD students learn about the anatomy of the teeth and oral cavity, as well as the principles of oral disease prevention and treatment. They also gain proficiency in performing various dental procedures, including extractions, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic treatments.

Upon graduation from dental school, DMD dentists may choose to pursue additional training or specialization in a particular area of dentistry through residency programs or continuing education courses. Some common dental specialties include orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery.

In their professional practice, DMD dentists play a crucial role in helping patients maintain optimal oral health and hygiene. They perform routine dental exams and cleanings to detect and prevent oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. DMD dentists also provide personalized treatment plans to address individual patients’ needs and concerns, whether it involves restoring damaged teeth, improving the appearance of the smile, or alleviating dental pain and discomfort.

In addition to clinical care, DMD dentists are often involved in patient education and advocacy efforts to promote good oral hygiene habits and raise awareness about the importance of oral health. They may work closely with other healthcare providers, such as physicians and orthodontists, to ensure comprehensive care for patients with complex medical needs or coexisting conditions.

Overall, DMD dentists play a vital role in safeguarding the oral health and well-being of individuals and communities. Through their expertise, compassion, and dedication to excellence, they help patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles that last a lifetime.

Her passion for whole-person health care continued to grow while caring for children with special healthcare needs and serving families in the poorest zip codes in Milwaukee.

After a few Midwest winters, Dr. Maddox is grateful to call Arizona home once again! In her free time, she and her husband Nick love spending time with their family, friends, and goofy dogs. On the weekends you can find them at the movie theater checking out the latest and greatest film, adventuring on a hike or seeking out new architectural finds around the city, or out and about looking for the best tacos in town.

 WHAT IS A DMD?
In the world of dentistry, the acronyms DDS and DMD often spark curiosity and confusion. What exactly is a DMD, and how does it differ from a DDS? Let's delve into the realm of dental education to demystify the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.

The DMD degree stands for Doctor of Dental Medicine. It's one of the two primary degrees awarded to graduates of accredited dental programs in the United States, with the other being DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Despite the different nomenclature, both degrees signify the same level of education and qualification in dentistry. The variance in titles primarily stems from historical and institutional differences among dental schools.

DMD programs encompass rigorous academic and clinical training, covering a wide array of dental specialties, including preventive, restorative, and surgical procedures. Students undergo comprehensive coursework and hands-on experience to develop expertise in oral health diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care.

Upon completion of their DMD degree, dentists are equipped to address various oral health needs, ranging from routine dental check-ups to complex reconstructive surgeries. They play a crucial role in promoting oral hygiene and enhancing overall well-being.

In essence, the DMD degree represents a commitment to excellence in dental practice, embodying the dedication and proficiency required to ensure optimal oral health for patients. Whether it's restoring a smile or alleviating dental discomfort, DMD dentists serve as guardians of dental wellness, making a significant impact on individuals' lives.
