WHAT IS A  DMD
A Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is professionally trained and licensed to diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. This includes the teeth, gums, and related structures of the mouth. DMDs provide a wide range of dental services, including routine check-ups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and restorative procedures such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. They also perform more complex procedures like root canals, dental implants, and oral surgery.

In addition to clinical skills, DMDs are educated in the biomedical sciences, which enables them to understand the connections between oral health and overall health. They play a crucial role in detecting systemic diseases that manifest in the mouth, such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. Furthermore, DMDs are trained in pain management and the use of anesthesia, ensuring patient comfort during dental procedures.

Preventive care is a significant part of a DMD’s role, involving patient education on proper oral hygiene practices and dietary choices to maintain oral health. DMDs often work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. Their goal is to improve and maintain their patients’ oral health, which is integral to overall well-being.
